LM Studio vs Ollama: which should you use? (2026)

An honest comparison of the two most popular local AI apps: interface, licence, Mac MLX support, headless servers and integrations.

Not sure which model to pull? Use the GPU model picker: enter your VRAM and RAM and get a list of Ollama models that fit.

Both are free, both run the same open models, and both expose an OpenAI-compatible API. The real difference is how you like to work.

Quick answer

  • Pick LM Studio if you want a polished desktop app: browse and download models from Hugging Face, tweak settings with sliders, and chat with documents without touching a terminal.
  • Pick Ollama if you want something that runs quietly in the background as a service, is fully open source, scripts easily, and is the default backend most tools integrate with.

Plenty of people install both.

When Ollama wins

  • Integrations. Continue, Open WebUI, n8n, Zed, JetBrains, and coding agents all list Ollama as a first-class provider.
  • Servers and Docker. One install command on Linux, runs as a systemd service. See install on Linux.
  • Repeatable setups. ollama pull qwen3.6:27b gets everyone on the team the exact same build.

When LM Studio wins

  • Exploring models. Search Hugging Face, see which quantisation fits your memory, and download in a click.
  • Fine control. GPU offload layers, context length and sampling settings are all visible.
  • Macs. Its MLX engine is mature and fast on Apple Silicon.

Our take

Start with Ollama if you plan to connect a coding assistant or build anything (our kit is built on it). Start with LM Studio if you mostly want a private ChatGPT-style app. Either way, the GPU picker tells you which models will fit.
