Why run AI locally? Privacy, cost and control explained

What local AI actually protects, where it doesn't, when the cost works out, and how to keep a local setup genuinely private.

Not sure which model to pull? Use the GPU model picker: enter your VRAM and RAM and get a list of Ollama models that fit.

Cloud AI is convenient, but every prompt you send leaves your machine. Running models locally changes that.

What you gain

  • Your data stays on your device. Prompts, documents and code are processed on your own hardware. Nothing is logged by a provider, used for training, or exposed in a third-party breach.
  • Works offline. Once a model is downloaded, you don’t need internet: on a plane, at a remote site, or during an outage.
  • No per-token bills or rate limits. After the hardware, the only running cost is electricity.
  • No surprise changes. A model you downloaded doesn’t get quietly updated, deprecated or “nerfed”. You pick the version.
  • Easier compliance. For client files, health or legal data, keeping processing on-premises can simplify your obligations. Check your own regulatory requirements; local doesn’t automatically mean compliant.

What it doesn’t do

  • Apps can still phone home. The model runs locally, but the app around it might send telemetry or sync chats. Read its settings and privacy policy.
  • Tunnels and “local” integrations aren’t always local. For example, using a local model in Cursor requires exposing it via a public tunnel, and prompts pass through Cursor’s servers (details).
  • Exposed servers are a risk. Ollama’s API has no built-in authentication. Keep it on localhost or behind a VPN or authenticating proxy.
  • Smaller models make more mistakes. Local models are excellent for many tasks, but the very largest cloud models still lead on hard reasoning.

Keeping it truly private: a checklist

  1. Leave Ollama on localhost:11434 (the default) unless you need network access.
  2. If you share it, use a VPN (e.g. Tailscale) or a reverse proxy with authentication. Never port-forward it.
  3. Turn off analytics and cloud sync in your chat front-end.
  4. Download models from official sources (the Ollama library or the original publisher on Hugging Face).
  5. Use full-disk encryption: chats and document embeddings are stored on disk.

Does it save money?

If you already own a gaming GPU, local AI is effectively free. Buying hardware just for AI pays off if you use it heavily, care about privacy, or want to run it for a team. For occasional use, a cloud subscription is cheaper. Our hardware guide shows what each budget tier can run.
